Momentus Golf Swing Trainer Review

Momentus swing trainer

Momentus Golf Training Aid vs. it’s “Secret” Competitor, the Medicus MaximusMomentus golf training aid score is 4 of 5 stars

The Momentus golf swing trainer is a weighted golf training aid that has been on the market for several years now. They sport the celebrity endorsements, but do their products deliver on the promise? What exactly is the promise, anyway? Sure, we understand how a heavier club will make our own clubs seem lighter, but will the Momentus line or it’s new competitor from Medicus, the Maximus strength trainer series, improve our distance without screwing up our swing?

Benefits of Weighted Swing Trainers Like the Momentus or Maximus

The following benefits were obtained from the official Momentus and Medicus Maxiumus websites. We edited out most, if any hype or promotional language.

  • Momentus and Maximus increase strength – in the hands, arms shoulders and back (all the important muscles of the golf swing) Adds distance to drives and accuracy to approach shots.
  • Maximize clubhead speed – (see previous) increased strength = greater clubhead speed.
  • Improve flexibility of golf swing – Increases shoulder turn and lengthens our golf swing.
  • Builds a Consistent golf swing – Counter-balanced weights of the Medicus Maximus or Momentus Strength Trainer promote a balanced and on-plane path.
  • Promotes Balance in golf swing & improved feel
  • – Counter-balanced weights swinging along the correct path force us to follow them, helping us shift weight throughout the golf swing.

Effectiveness of the Momentus or Medicus Maximus

We ignored the usual touting of PGA Tour stars like Fred Funk and numerous golf instructors we have never heard of, instead trusting online survey respondents, and actual product tests.

Each of the product testers used the Momentus golf swing trainer each night for a set number of swings before bed. We then ranked them from our testing phase in order of maximum to minimum effectiveness.

  1. Medicus Maximus or Momentus golf increases distance – Try an average increase in 2 weeks of 10%. Future increases would likely not be as dramatic, but imagine taking your 7 iron from 155 to 170 in two weeks. Better yet, increase your driving distance from 250 yards to 275 yards in a fortnight. That’s a big woo-hoo for us muscleheads!
  2. Either club increases strength – We were a bit skeptical about this – “C’mon, 2lb 6 oz?” Testers found it provided surprising resistance and some sore muscles the next day.
  3. Improve flexibility of golf swing – Honestly, this was one benefit we had not considered before testing. The added weight does extend the body past it’s previous positions. Just like in the weight room; light weights with high reps increases fluidity, and stamina. Most golfers (like myself) did not understand how crucial flexiblity, not pure strength is in increasing distance. Both the Maximus and the Momentus worked great in this area
  4. Maximize clubhead speed – Made the tester’s normal clubs feel like they were swinging a Q-tip. This hurt the accuracy a bit, as tempo is key. Used on a regular basis, the swing would eventually get more solid.

Complaints we found in reviews about Momentus Golf products

Do-it-Yourself? Forget it! Someone suggested building your own weighted club. All you need is a huge saw, some weights, glue, blah blah. I don’t know about you, but I have a high value on my time. Why spend a whole day going to the hardware store to build a piece of junk. Great thing about the modern world is specialization!

We of course don’t like over-hype in any products, so if you are a beginner that is considering the Medicus Maximus, do not expect miracles in your swing. This swing trainer would be great for intermediate to advanced players, golfers trying to build strength, or for elderly golfers.

Medicus Maximus Outshines Momentus swing trainer – Recap:

Neither club is a magic cure-all, and it doesn’t cover as many swing improvements as the Medicus Dual Hinge, but the Medicus Maximus weighted strength trainer

  • absolutely increases your strength and distance if you are good at golf or not
  • has high quality – you’ll have it for a long time
  • is extremely affordable

With the extra cost benefits of the Medicus Maximus, we choose it as our 100% recommended buy for the strength trainer in your practice bag.

Medicus Maximus Golf Strength Trainer product line

  • Maximus Super Combo Pack - For the golfer serious in maximizing strenth and distance in all facets of their game from tee to green
  • Maximus Driver – so we can get used to the flatter swing plane over an iron shot
  • Maximus 7 iron – This has a dual-weighting system that has exercises geared to the longer approach shots. We found the exercises to be quite useful for the overall swing, even without the Momentus training aid. We dare say we liked this club better than the original (shh!).
  • Maxiumus Lob Wedge – Helps groove all of your short-iron shots to stretch your range with higher-lofted and more-accurate clubs.
